Gardening Gifts

When it comes to gift giving nothing is more valuable than a gift that can be enjoyed for years to come and supplies satisfaction with every bite.

Gardening gifts are very popular and they are less expensive than buying something for someone that they probably would not use.

When you give gardening gifts you can personalize that gift to suit the interest of the one receiving the gift.

For example, if someone enjoys cooking and eating Italian dishes, you may want to give them an indoor herb garden that features herbs such as oregano, basil, and cilantro.

You can add other herbs that would be great to compliment any Italian dish. This gift will allow them to enjoy their Italian dishes more because they can use the fresh herbs instead of the dried herbs bought at the stores.

Another great gardening gift would be to buy a mini greenhouse and stock it up with plant seeds, watering can and soil that they can put together when they are ready to grow their own garden.

They may be able to plant enough seeds to sow an entire garden for the planting season and your gift may give them enough food to can and preserve throughout the winter.

Gardening gifts is a great way to let someone know how much you care about them. It is simple but can last them as long as they want to grow their own food.

Herbs also have another benefit to them. They can be used in teas, foods and other ways in order to help heal the body of ailments that may be causing pain or discomfort.

Understanding Your Garden’s Environmental Factors

Your garden plants will flourish when given the right conditions. Some plants will only thrive in a hot, sunny area while others may need a cool, moist and shady area. You need to choose a garden spot that is best suited to the plants’ you plan to grow.

Climate

The climate can cause a variety of responses in growing plants depending on their location, its stage of maturity, the type of weather and the length of time they were exposed to it. Climate can have a huge effect on plant development and growth, especially when the weather conditions are extreme.

Temperature

All plants have their own maximum and minimum temperature tolerances. If they are exposed to temperatures that are too high or too low, they will die.  Normally, the maximum temperature for healthy growth is about 95 degrees Fahrenheit.  The minimum temperature can vary dramatically depending on the plant.  The air and soil temperature usually determine the length of the growing season.

Soil temperature can also determine a plant’s root development and how many nutrients can be absorbed. Sandy soils warm up faster than clay soils so plants can be started in them earlier in the  year.

Water

All plants need water. Some of the required water will come from rainfall although much of it is absorbed by the soil and does not get to the plant root.  So, your garden must be located in an area where water can be gotten to easily.

In some cases, there can be too much water.  Most plants will not survive in boggy areas or where climate conditions are extremely humid.  Some of this depends on whether water can be drained from soil adequately.  Soil that is made up of clay has poor drainage.

Light

Plants require some sunlight to produce photosynthesis which helps plants produce their own food.  Plants will not grow in an area that has no sun at all.  Seasonal changes in the sun will also determine how a plant grows and thrives.

Air Circulation

Even a moderate amount of wind can cause damage to fragile plants.  However, a light wind can be beneficial when it provides relief from extreme heat.  A light breeze can also help prevent plant diseases by moving stagnant air away from them.

Microclimate

Some gardens may be protected from the weather conditions by trees and hedges.  This causes what experts call a microclimate.  There are several factors that affect the microclimate in a garden.  These are hedges and fences, shadows from houses and walls, areas of strong sunlight, boggy areas, the soil type, and soil pH.  Microclimate is also affected by the plants that are already in the area and by the flatness or hilliness of the land. A garden located in a sloped area can have major drainage problems.

Once you know your garden’s environment, you will be better able to choose the correct plants for your garden site. Each garden spot will have its own challenges and advantages so it will be up to you to choose the best plants to take advantage of them.

Gardening for Kids

There are several different kinds of gardening; plants, flowers, trees, fruits, herbs and more.

Gardening is very important to everyone because everyone needs to eat in order to stay alive.

A garden can be any size that you want it to be. You can have a box outside your window with a few plants in them or you can have acres of land as a garden.

Gardening can be done in different seasons, depending on your climate and where you live. Grown ups can grow a garden that will produce fresh vegetables to eat for dinner or to can or preserve so they can be eaten during the winter.

Children need to learn about gardening for several reasons; it can teach them where food can come from, it can teach them how plants grow from seeds to plants that produce, it can also teach them other things like patience as they
watch the garden grow.

Gardening also gives the kids a chance to get outdoors and do something that is productive and fun.

Allow your child to go with you to buy supplies that are needed for their garden. You may even want to start them out in a pot or a box outside that they can plant a few plants in.

Some of the items you will need to purchase would be soil, seeds, hand held garden tools, a watering can and some fertilizer if needed.

Have your child read the directions on each package and notice how everything is grown differently.

For example, cucumbers are barely planted under the ground while carrots need to be planted deeper. Knowing the depth of each seed will ensure that your child’s garden will grow accurately and productive.

New Gardeners Guide to Planting a Container Garden

Container gardens give those people who don’t have yards or room for a “regular” garden a way to grow the gardens they crave. Now, they can have a garden on a deck, patio or in a window box or even inside their houses. All types of plants can be grown: vegetables, shrubs, roses, annuals, perennials. The list is endless.

Containers filled with colorful foliage and flowers can really brighten the home, indoors and out. You can have any color scheme that you wish, with colors that harmonize or contrast with your existing home colors. Even just having plant foliage without flowers can liven up a drab house.

When you are choosing plants for your container garden, think about the height of your plants in relation to where you plan to put them. Planting a tall plant or shrub in a window box could block the view from inside a window. Flowering plants should have a long blooming season so that you don’t have to change them out too frequently.

The containers that you choose also make a difference in the feel of the finished garden. You can be creative and use everything from terracotta pots to large dishes to old oaken buckets. You are only limited by your imagination. Pay attention to the material that the pot is made of. Some materials (such as terracotta) may need to be sealed or painted so that they don’t leach all of the water away from the plants.

If purchasing pots for indoors or deck and patio use, you will need to have saucers or plates for them to set on. Otherwise, you will have water and dirt stains on your floors. I have even seen some decks that have rotting wood because of water damage from potted plants.

Never, ever use garden dirt in your plantings. It is essential that you use a high quality potting mix. This will guard against the pests and diseases that you would get from garden soil and will ensure the best possible performance from your plants.

Do you know where you will be locating your plants? Make a plan about where your container garden will be, and then purchase the plants and containers to fit into that area. You also need to determine whether the area is shady or sunny before you purchase your plants. Shade-loving plants will not do well in direct sunlight and vice-versa.

You should also pay attention to the root size of your plants. Those that have a large root system will not be suitable for growing in pots — even if they are large pots.

You may not have much room for plants in the front of your home. However, you can still place a couple of medium-sized flower pots on both sides of the door or front steps. The flowering plants will make a beautiful statement about your home. The plants and flowers don’t need to match exactly. In fact, it’s better if they are of differently varieties. This will give the front of your home more character.

If you are grouping plants in an area, it’s best to group them in odd numbers. You should also vary the height and type of plants. You can unite the dissimilar plants by placing them in similar pots and by adding stones or rocks that are alike in type and color.

By using creativity and common sense you can grow a beautiful garden even if you don’t have the normal outdoor space that a normal outdoor garden requires.
